Use Short URLs

Seems like a super easy task.

Yet, most people fail to do this and it’s harming their ranking.

Just use your target keywords in your URLs. In case, you are targeting long-tail keywords, it’s not necessary to use every one of those words in URL.

Try to make it descriptive using words relevant to what post is about.

Avoid using URLs long as follows:

“https: //googleblog.blogspot. com/2009/12/making-URLs-shorter-for-google-toolbar.html”

Here’s what your URLs should look like:

“swopnadigital.com/seo-company”

“Short and Concise”

In case you are using categories in your URLs, try not to use many categories.

Nearer you are from homepage, Better your chance for ranking.

E-commerce websites tend to use a lot of categories, especially for their product pages. Here’s what it might look:

This page would find a hard time ranking for competitive keywords – even if it’s from a high domain authority website.

For blog section, don’t do this –

“swopnadigital.com/blog/on-page-seo”

Remember to shorten the path from the homepage. Instead, use URLs like this –

“swopnadigital.com/on-page-seo”

Optimize Your Title (H1) for Your Target Keyword 

H1 is the most important heading tag as of today.

Usually, this should be the title of your page or blog post. There should only be 1 H1 tag per page.

(I don’t see any reasons to use many)

Use your target keyword in an H1 tag to optimize your page for that phrase.

You might wonder –

“Where do target keywords come from? How do I know what keywords to target?”

It comes from keyword research.

Keyword research is a vital part of any SEO campaigns, which comes even before on-page efforts. Make sure you do research on which keywords to target.

[Pro Tip: Use keyword at the beginning of the title]

Here’s what I mean:

In the above screenshot, we got an idea for our heading. That is –

“The Insider’s Guide to Content Marketing”

Of course, this is not the title anyone would use in their post. Just for the sake of the example, let me use this one.

Here, the keyword “content marketing” lies at the end of the title. Sometimes, a small tweak ( bringing keyword in front) can make it SEO friendly. For example –

“Content Marketing: The Insider’s Guide”

Use LSI Keywords in Your Content

In case you are unaware of LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) keywords, it helps to learn about it first.

Basically, the idea is simple.

LSI keywords are semantically related keywords.

“SEO” and “Online Marketing” are somehow related, right ??

Here’s how Google thinks about it:

If a user is writing a post about smartphones, then naturally they would mention words like “Samsung”, “iPhone” or “Technology”, “3G”, “4G” and so on.

Google refers to them as LSI keywords.

You might think:

“How can I find about LSI keywords then ??”

Actually, there is a myriad of tools, but a website named LSI Graph comes in handy to get up and running.

Here’s what it looks like:

Just enter your seed (target keyword) and you get a list of all the related keywords.

Here, I see a lot of semantically related keywords for the phrase – “Yamaha Fascino”

We can use this list in 2 ways.

#1 Use the LSI keyword in sub-heading 

#2 Use the LSI keyword inside the paragraphs

In the above example, if I opted to use “Yamaha Fascino Specifications” as my chosen phrase, I would use that as a sub-heading for my post.

So, the post would be about “Yamaha Fascino”

Sub-heading – “Yamaha Fascino Specifications”

And, I use other words like “honda activa” inside the post content.

The other place to find more LSI keywords is – “Searches related to” section.

Quick Tip:

Remember to make it as organic as possible and not overdo it.

After all, Google does not want content with LSI keywords stuffed all over. They just use LSIs to know about the topic better.

User Experience (and Dwell Time)

No matter, how optimized your site or how better your content is, if your user does not stay in your site for long, then Google drop your ranking.

Let’s find out why.

Here’s what Google wants:

“Google wants their searchers to find their information”

And, if they find what they want on your website, they stay on your website.

That’s how Google algorithms work.

In case, they come to your website and bounce back to Google, then Google knows it and drops your ranking for the term.

Let me provide a practical example:

A user searches for a term “Film Production Company”

Let’s assume 2 websites come up in No 1 and No 2 result.

#1 – ABC

#2 – XYZ

Naturally, a lot of people would click on ABC’s link because it’s on top (more than 60%)

However, if their website is outdated, poorly designed or bloated with advertisements everywhere, then the user would click back button.

And, then the user would click on the second result, i.e – XYZ’s link.

Let’s assume the user stays on XYZ’s website for a long time.

Here’s what happens:

Google thinks that the website of XYZ is more relevant for the keyword “Film Production Company” than that of ABC.

After a certain time, XYZ will be on the #1 position for that keyword phrase.

When users stay on your website for a long time (i.e longer dwell time), your bounce rate decreases. And, your overall ranking will go up.

Optimize Your Title for CTR (Click Through Rate)

Usually, the 1st result gets around 60% of all the clicks.

Let’s assume that you stand on #2 for certain keyword.

If for some reasons, you start getting more than 60% click-through rate, soon your ranking would uprise from 2 to 1.

Here’s the reason for this:

Google wants to show the relevant result for the query. CTR is one of the ways they sort out relevancy.

Google has valued relevancy for a long time. And, still continues to do so. CTR is the method through which they know whether users are getting what they want.

When users find what they like …

… they click on it.

(as simple as that)

The question is – “How can I increase my CTR so that I could rank higher?”

Numerous studies have been conducted on this topic. Several of which point to the same results. Here I’ve compiled few tactics to help you boost your organic CTR right now:

  • Use Numbers (1, 2). Usually, odd numbers perform better in clicks.
  • Utilize symbols and brackets {}
  • Add CTA (Call-to-Action) to call people to your website
  • Use modifiers like “free”, “best”, “today” and so on.

Of course, it’s not that easy to read an audience’s mind.

However, as long as you are giving people what they want, and make them feel it through words – they will happily click on your search result.

Reduce Page Loading Time

Website Speed matters.

But, not in the way you think.

Most of the people get it wrong. Increasing website speed does not directly improve ranking. It helps to decrease the bounce rate, and increase people spending time on your website.

Which, in turn, will boost your ranking.

Reverse the scenario:

Your website loads very slow.

In this case, even if you have high quality or super actionable content, a user will press that back button.

Because –

No one wants to wait too long to get information these days.

That’s how site speed affects rankings.

Ok. Enough with the explanation.

Let me show you how you can use a tool called GTmetrix to improve your webpage loading speed.

Head over to GTmetrix.

Enter the URL of the webpage you want to test.

And, then you get a detailed report on your webpage.

It has several test reports separated by tabs.

PageSpeed and YSlow tab have a lot of recommendations to speed up the page.

These recommendations are in order (with high priority being on top)

Go thoroughly through the reports and see whether you can follow on those recommendations.

After these, go to the Waterfall tab.

Waterfall tab shows you the list of the resources that is slowing up your webpage.

Look into the resources that are taking up too much time to load …..

... indicated by bars (with numbers on right)

Sometimes, a plugin or an image takes too much time to load. In case, these do not add much value – it’s better to replace or delete them.

Next advice I have to increase the website loading speed is to use a smush tool to optimize image size.

For the WordPress users, I recommend a plugin named Smush Image Compression”.

This tool smushes every image that you upload in your site.

Which means, it reduces the size of your image without a noticeable change in quality.

Write Long-Form Content

Here’s the truth:

When a user searches for something using a query, Google wants to show the best result possible on that topic.

How does Google figure out this?

Length is one of the metrics.

Of course, quality always plays a role.

That’s the reason search engines are investing heavily to study user experience and user behavior. However, the general rule is that “longer content tend to be high quality”

One of the researches from Backlinko has shown that “longer content significantly outranks shorter ones”

There are several other case studies which prove that search engines prefer long-form content as of today.

(Don’t write boring long content)

You have to work on to keep people reading your page.

Google loves super long form content.

And, if you want to keep it happy then always aim to write longer content based on your topic.

You might wonder – “How long?

Depends on your niche and content itself.

But I recommend writing on an average of 1700+ words.

Longer the better

Google uses more than 200 ranking factors to figure out about any piece of content.

There are link-building, on-site techniques, domain-level factors and what not.

Some of which are even out of our control.

Nonetheless, on-page SEO is always under our control.

Of course, there are more on-page techniques. I listed those which are deemed to be the important ones. Here are few of other factors which are not mentioned in the post above:

  • Image ALT tag optimization
  • Internal Linking
  • Title Tag and Meta Description
  • Mobile Friendliness
  • Content Frequency

In Conclusion

One true fact about SEO is it keeps changing. Minor changes happen a lot. After every Google algorithm updates, there’s a new buzzword.

However, this does not mean every time we should change how we think about SEO. Basically, if we keep the user in mind, search ultimately follows.
